The city has acquired a 10,000-square-foot vacant lot in the Pearl District at Northwest Raleigh Street and 14th Avenue that will be developed into multifamily units for homeless or extremely poor families with children.

The city is asking for requests for proposals to develop at least 20 new family-size apartments. The Portland Housing Bureau will work with to identify eligible families whose income is at or below 30 percent of the median family income, currently $24,250 for a family of four.

According to the housing bureau, the property was acquired at a discount from per its agreement with the city to maintain a rate of 35 percent affordable residential units on the 34 acres it owns in the River District Urban Renewal Area.

More details on the RFP are at the housing bureau’s . The RFPs are due by Aug. 17 and will be awarded by Sept. 30.

Portland Housing Bureau spokeswoman Martha Calhoon said the housing bureau and Home Forward will work to obtain a federal rent subsidy to support 90 percent of the family-size units.

Calhoon said the housing bureau has identified families with children as a priority in its community housing effort.

鈥淭his site is in a part of the city with so many opportunities where developable land is getting increasingly hard to acquire,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e thought this would make an ideal location to bring vulnerable families with children into a high opportunity area where they can make the most of what the central city has to offer.鈥
