The American Institute of Architects’ Portland chapter is gearing up for its annual awards celebration, and Executive Vice President Robert Hoffman is gratified that more than 80 entries were submitted 鈥� up from 60 last year.

This year’s jurors bring a high level of expertise, Hoffman added.

鈥淲e’ve been so lucky in recent years to have really, really conscientious and creative jurors,鈥� he said. 鈥淧ortland is a city of substantial size, and it’s not New York or L.A. or Chicago, but we have really great architects interested in coming here.鈥�

The awards ceremony will take place Oct. 30 at Revolution Hall, at 1300 S.E. Stark St., with a social hour at 7 p.m. and the awards ceremony to follow. Tickets can be purchased .

This year’s jurors are Sierra Bainbridge, senior director at MASS Design Group in Boston; Betsy Williamson, co-founder of Williamson Chong in Toronto; and Kevin Daly of Kevin Daly Architects in Santa Monica, Calif.

Hoffman said the AIA committee that chose the jurors focused on finding architects with a wide variety of experience from different areas, and not just 鈥渁nybody that was available.鈥�

鈥淲e were trying to find people who will engage and work with each other,鈥� he said.

Hoffman said people can get an idea of how the jurors work together by attending Jury Critique Night on Oct. 29, at 5:30 p.m., at the Center for Architecture, at 403 N.W. 11th St. Admission is $5 at the door or free for students.

On Jury Critique Night attendees will be able to listen to jurors compare notes and discuss entries 鈥� possibly giving hints about their decisions. The jurors will be seated on a stage while entries are featured on a large screen behind them, Hoffman said. They will then engage in an open conversation about their impressions.

鈥淭hey will talk about what’s interesting, talk about trends and give some insight going into the next evening,鈥� Hoffman said.

Hoffman will emcee the awards celebration, and he said U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici and Portland Mayor Charlie Hales will attend.
