Design Like Mad, an organization that hosts all-day 鈥渄esign marathons鈥� in different cities to help local nonprofits, is coming to Portland next month, and could use a little help.

The event will take place Nov. 7 at Portland Community College‘s Sylvania campus, volunteer planning committee member Felicita Monteblanco said. Event sponsors are still needed, she added, to help provide lunch for participants.

鈥淥ur expenses are really low and we only need to provide meals for our pro bono designers,鈥� she said. 鈥淲e need about $500 so we can feed everyone and have snacks.鈥�

More volunteer architects are needed too, Monteblanco said. More than 20 design professionals in fields such as logo design, website development and interior design have already signed up she said.

During Design Like Mad PDX, eight area nonprofits will benefit from the design advice given by more than 20 professional designers and assistance provided by PCC design students, Monteblanco said. More details are available at .

Donate Life Northwest, for example, an organ donor support group, is looking for help with print design and branding for next year’s Tabor Trot, its annual 5K run.

The Washington County Museum in Hillsboro needs help with web development, Monteblanco said, and at least one nonprofit needs architectural design advice.

Design Like Mad PDX is gratifying for volunteers and a great value for the nonprofits, Monteblanco said, but also a valuable experience for design students. Tami Shannon, a student and planning committee member who also took part last year, said participation in Design Like Mad solidified her decision to major in design.

鈥淚 had just started in design last year and was taking my first class,鈥� she said. 鈥淏ut I learned so much I decided to go down that road.鈥�
