Portland State University is preparing a request for proposals for a 鈥渃lean and seal鈥� of an existing parking structure, in hopes of achieving the new 鈥�Green Garage鈥� status.

Work on the parking tower at 617 S.W. Montgomery St. will feature local labor and environmentally-sensitive materials, according to a list of Green Parking Council certification standards that PSU plans to append to its solicitation notice.

The GPC was formed by a group of parking operators and real estate professionals four years ago, after the U.S. Green Building Council stopped awarding Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design ratings to facilities with more than 75 percent of space devoted to parking. Like LEED, Green Garage is a points-based rating system with consideration given to management practices, efficient use of materials and innovative design.

The GPC recently announced the first seven facilities in the U.S. to receive . Efforts are now under way for more than 30 others to atain it, according to Trevyr Meade, program manager for the GPC.

The PSU project will be a standard one for whichever general contractor wins the $67,000 bid, said Stacey Balenger, the university鈥檚 construction contracts supervisor.

鈥淭his is our first 鈥楪reen Garage,鈥� but other than that it鈥檚 not that special,鈥� she said.

Some of the certification requirements will require the winning bidder to provide documentation and receipts proving the origin of all materials and the final destination of all waste.

The parking structure is six levels, five above ground. It adjoins the University Services Building on the block between Southwest Broadway, Montgomery Street, Sixth Avenue and Mill Street.
