The Kalama Planning Commission last week approved the Port of Kalama’s master plan to develop 70 acres of port property for the anticipated Spencer Creek Business Park in Kalama, Wash. It is expected to encompass 70 acres, or 3 million square feet. When finished, the park will have more than 500,000 square feet of space 鈥� for a mix of light industrial, office, commercial and retail uses.

The port and the city worked together to craft a new city code to enable the flexible, multipurpose development. They will now continue working together on the permitting process for developing the site infrastructure. An economic evaluation now pending will ensure that development proceeds in a way that jobs are created and local revenue is generated in an environmentally responsible way, according to Port of Kalama marketing manager Liz Newman.

鈥淲e couldn’t begin the development without having the master plan complete,鈥� she said. 鈥淭here will be more jobs and employment opportunities. It should ultimately increase the tax revenue for the city.鈥�

The port is envisioning a 20-year build-out that started with the creation of Haydu Park 鈥� a 24-acre recreational facility that represented the first phase of development on the east end of port property.
