A group of industry professionals convened at Portland Community College last month to discuss strategies for improving workforce diversity in contracting. The Diversity in the Construction Trades Summit, presented by pre-apprenticeship training programs Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. and Constructing Hope, brought together representatives of construction firms, government agencies, procurement staff, and labor organizations.
The day included workforce overviews by representatives of TriMet and BOLI, pre-apprenticeship program summaries from OTI and Constructing Hope, and a presentation from Cathleen Massier, a program manager with the City of Portland’s Procurement Services division.
Attendees then broke into small groups for discussions on topics including creating better partnerships with pre-apprenticeship programs, best practices in enforcing and supporting good faith efforts, partnerships to increase diversity in fields leadership positions, and strategic thinking to increase diversity in specialized fields.
