Between 40,000 and 50,000 board feet of Douglas fir salvaged from selective demolition of Centennial Mills will be sold 鈥� mostly to wholesalers, said Jeff James, project manager for Northwest Demolition & Dismantling of Tigard.

James said that at this point in the project involving multiple buildings on 4.7 acres along the Willamette River in Northwest Portland, most of the wood is coming from warehouses.

鈥淲e have a lot of roof rafter type material, floor joists and support columns,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t’s all essentially (Douglas) fir of varying sizes.鈥�

James said that many 12-by-12-inch columns and 12-by-18-inch columns had been salvaged as well as 4-by-8-inch and 6-by-10-inch boards. He said his company usually sells salvaged wood in large lots to wholesalers.

Builders can then cut the wood to the size they need, James said.

鈥淚t depends on what they’re doing with it,鈥� he said. 鈥淪ome might take the material (as is) and actually build something, while some will resurface it through a sawmill and cut it to the size they want.鈥�

Although small amounts won’t be sold to individuals, James said that local developers interested in buying salvaged Centennial Mills wood for a project can contact Chad Hoffart at Northwest Demolition at 877-598-9706.

Shawn Uhlman, spokesman for the Portland Development Commission, stressed that only volume sales will be considered.

鈥淔olks need to understand this is not a board or two, but for serious projects,鈥� he said.
