Philip Arthur Rude, a noted Portland architect, died Aug. 10 at age 74.

Rude was born in Seattle on Aug. 23, 1941, and raised in Burien, Washington. In 1964 he received a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering from Washington State University.

After graduating, Rude married Jackie Yarber, moved to Portland and began his career with architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. He joined Yost Grube Hall Architecture in 1988, and later worked with Hoffman Construction and FFA Architecture and Interiors.

During his career, Rude was actively involved with the planning and construction of numerous Pacific Northwest projects, including Autzen Stadium in Eugene; St. Vincent Hospital in Portland; the historic preservation of the White Stag Building in Portland; the historic restoration of the Marcus Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla, Washington; and the St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

Rude was a lifetime member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Beaverton. In addition to serving as the church council’s treasurer, he also served on its building committee; he was instrumental in hiring another noted architect, Pietro Belluschi, to design the church nave and narthex.

Rude is survived by his wife, Jackie; his son, Ken, and daughter-in-law, Tracey; his daughter, Stacy; and four grandchildren. Memorial services were held Aug. 27 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the St. Matthew Lutheran Foundation or its food pantry at 10390 S.W. Canyon Road in Beaverton.
