P&C Construction was founded in 1961 by a carpenter (Ray Pettyjohn) and a civil engineer (Don Campbell) who got their start traveling the country repairing structures for Georgia-Pacific, primarily trussed roofs.

Campbell and Pettyjohn worked as far afield as Florida before getting into constructing wood products manufacturing facilities. They later completed a number of renovations and new buildings around the Portland area for developer H. Naito Company. These included the historic renovation of Montgomery Park, Albers Mill and McCormick Pier.

As part of modernization efforts, the company relocated in 2010 from Gresham to industrial Northwest Portland. Today, the trio of Steve Malany, Steve Anderson and Bruce Heintz run the company, having succeeded Larry Koester and Campbell’s son, Dale, who for years was a prominent voice in discussions about construction-related issues in the Pacific Northwest.

P&C plans to increase its design-build work, according to marketing manager Sabrina Henkhaus. It has booked upcoming design-build contracts for the Beaverton School District, the city of Banks and a consortium of Clackamas County doctors.

Its major markets today are聽K-12, higher education, flex-office-warehouse, health care, public safety, libraries, historic renovations and nonprofits. It聽tackles jobs in nearly all parts of the state 鈥� the firm聽even has t-shirts with maps of Oregon showing the breadth of projects it now has on the boards.

鈥淲e really are an Oregon contractor,鈥� Henkhaus said. 鈥淎nd our work is pretty balanced right now. We’re about 50-50 with public and private clients.鈥�

P&C has partially completed the Open School East and Rockwood Boys & Girls Club 鈥� two facilities sharing the same site and a few amenities. The $5.4 million school job consists of 22,000 square feet of new construction, with a central space with seating for more than 200 people. The $6.3 million Boys & Girls Club project 鈥� still under way 鈥� involves repurposing an existing office structure and adding a tilt-up gym.

Both projects were designed by Holst Architecture and are being managed by Omega Alpha Management.

P&C is the contractor for the $8.1 million, 18,000-square-foot OHSU Knight-Legacy Health Cancer Collaborative facility on the campus of Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. 鈥淐ollaborative鈥� refers to the roles of the CMH and Oregon Health & Science University, which have teamed to build a facility that will provide radiation treatment to patients along the North Coast. Completion is expected in 2017. The project was designed by PKA Architects. Day CPM is the construction manager.

P&C recently delivered the $7 million Oregon City Public Library renovation and addition. A 103-year-old, 5,000-square-foot historic Carnegie Library was upgraded and gained 15,000 square feet. The project was designed by Scott | Edwards Architecture and SOJ was the construction manager.

Construction in ongoing for the city of Lake Oswego’s $10.6 million Public Works and Parks Maintenance Facilities project. The two-phased effort involves construction of two concrete, tilt-up buildings; a 27,000-square-foot office and vehicle maintenance building; a 17,000-square-foot storage-motor-pool building and a decantation facility. Day CPM is the construction manager.

Construction of a 38,000-square-foot concrete tilt-up shell and tenant improvements is proceeding at the Fourth Plain Business Park in Vancouver, Washington. The $3.3 million project was designed by Mildren Design Group for Pacific NW Properties.

P&C is performing the extensive renovation of the Patriot Hall at Clatsop Community College in Astoria. The $13.6 million project involves demolition of concrete and wood structures built in the 1920s, preservation of the existing foundation, and construction of retaining walls and a new building with a gym with seating for 500 people. The architect is SRG Partnership and CM Services Co. is the construction manager.
