A mother-son subcontracting outfit has been sold in the wake of an accident that took place during the Sellwood Bridge replacement project.

Susan Storie, the founder of Storie & Associates, sold her company after she pinned her son’s legs with a forklift, according to a representative of Barrier West, which purchased Storie’s company.

The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division last month released its report of the Sept. 13 incident through a records request. It describes how owner Susan Storie, operating a forklift, caught the heel of employee John Storie鈥檚 boot and dragged him to the ground, where the forklift ran over both his legs.

A subcontracted worker, hearing the victim鈥檚 screams, ran toward Susan Storie and yelled for her to stop, according to the accident synopsis.

鈥淗e ran towards the scene screaming for the forklift operator to stop, which she did,鈥� it reads. 鈥淪he then asked the victim what he wanted her to do, to which he told her to reverse off of him, which she did.鈥�

Emergency services were contacted and John Storie was taken to a hospital. John Storie is described in the report as Susan Storie鈥檚 son and sole employee.

The business, Storie & Associates, was cited for committing two violations 鈥� one serious 鈥� and fined a total of $1,680.

The accident occurred as the $290 million bridge replacement project was winding down. Susan Storie sold the business to Barrier West around the time of the accident, according to a company representative.

Storie & Associates, according to its website, supplies concrete barriers and performed other highway work since 1985. The firm lists itself as a certified woman-owned and emerging small business in Oregon and Washington.
