A design by Portland-based Allied Works Architecture is one of in the United Kingdom Holocaust Memorial International Design Competition.

The competition is a two-stage contest to design a national memorial to honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution. The winning entry will be part of a $64 million memorial built alongside the Houses of Parliament in Victoria Tower Gardens adjacent to the River Thames.

In its proposed design, Allied Works aimed to create a space to highlight the voices of the survivors. The design, which resembles a prayer shawl, includes a poet’s blessing and a learning center.

Other short-listed entries include a meteorite-inspired design by Anish Kapoor and Zaha Hadid Architects; a memorial-learning center combination by heneghan peng architects; and a striking, starkly simple design submitted by Studio Libeskind and Haptic Architects.

Nearly 100 entries from around the world were presented during the competition’s first phase which ended Oct. 17, 2016. That field was cut to the final 10 in January. The short-listed designs are on display around London, and a winner will be announced this summer.
