Design Week Portland, an annual festival that starts Friday, offers a different perspective in 2017. The headquarters for this year is The Redd, at 831 S.E. Salmon St., while the event’s traditional home, Pioneer Courthouse Square, is being renovated.

鈥淲e have to work harder to draw the crowd than in the past,鈥� Design Week Director Tsilli Pines said. 鈥淎t Pioneer Square, we drew 10,000 people, but a lot of those just happened to be at the square. We expect about 5,000 people over the week to attend events.鈥�

The six-year-old event will include nearly 25 sessions touching on topics in specialties including architecture, graphic design and fashion. One of the biggest challenges for attendees often is figuring out exactly what to check out.

鈥淎ny design discipline you can think of, it’s in there,鈥� Pines said. 鈥淧eople get a little overwhelmed. We try to provide sample itineraries so that people can see a curated list of things that are in the area they want to know about. We have ambassadors with print programs that list things more concisely. They can help people figure out what is going on.鈥�

Event organizers will also have an itinerary listing local design professionals’ plans. That way people can see what is most interesting to professionals in a given area.

鈥淭here is pretty good representation,鈥� Pines said. 鈥淲e draw a lot of students and design directors. It’s a pretty diverse crowd.鈥�

Many of the presentations and displays at event headquarters will focus on a proposed green loop around Portland. There will also be TED-style talks and panel discussions on a variety of subjects.

鈥淲e are going to have five things a day,鈥� Pines said. 鈥淲e also will have a main stage where we will have 24 talks. The content is a little more centered around things that are happening and the changing climate that architects are working in.鈥�

Sustainability will be a major theme of many Design Week events.

鈥淓very year we have sustainable action discussions,鈥� said Josh Cabot, senior job captain at SERA Architects. 鈥淲e thought this was a good chance to pair our sustainable action discussions with Design Week.鈥�

SERA Architects will host a panel discussion, called Endurant Design, focusing on the ability to maintain resilience while undergoing stressors. Cabot said participants will break into smaller groups to focus on more specific concepts like urban change and ways to get neighborhoods to use resources most effectively. A big focus will be on the Old Town neighborhood where SERA Architects’ offices sit.

鈥淲e have been in Old Town since 1968,鈥� Cabot said. 鈥淚t will be fun to have everyone talk about Old Town. It will be sort of a visioning session, letting people dig into and focus on the area around Old Town.鈥�

Also, a series of more than 100 open houses will take place in different sections of the city over the course of the week. Various design companies will hold panel discussions and seminars about items of interest in the design community.

鈥淲e really liked the idea of having a panel about the life span of design,鈥� said Olivia Guethling, marketing director at Works Progress Architecture.

The firm’s roundtable, called Design (Im)permanence, will explore the perception that design values change while the objects that designers work on largely stay the same.

91视频 like Design Week give architects a chance to discuss concepts that they don’t get to ordinarily, Guethling said.

鈥淚n the day to day, we don’t have the space to have those conversations,鈥� she said. 鈥淭hat is a neat opportunity here.鈥�
