One of the Portland-metro area’s most popular summer destinations is facing some serious traffic congestion that will continue in upcoming months.

Multnomah County officials announced last week that construction work has started on the Sturgeon Lake restoration project on Sauvie Island, where crews will eventually build a bypass road and remove a pair of failing culverts as part of a permanent bridge replacement across Dairy Creek.

Sturgeon Lake is connected to the Columbia River by Dairy Creek. Currently, the creek is plugged with silt and debris, which is causing the lake to also fill with silt. The plan is to restore the waterway and tidal flow from the Columbia River.

Construction work is expected to delay traffic as it passes through the construction area using a temporary bypass roadway. This will be particularly noticeable on summer weekends, when there often is a stream of visitors to Sauvie Island beaches.

鈥淭his is a major phase of the project that will last through the busy Labor Day weekend,鈥� Multnomah County public information officer Mike Pullen stated.

Work will also include deepening the Dairy Creek channel.

The bypass road has two lanes and will accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicle drivers. Construction flaggers will be on hand during work activities.

Sturgeon Lake is the largest tidally-influenced freshwater lake in the United States and one of the most biologically significant aquatic and wildlife habitats in Oregon.
