Multnomah County is seeking public input on four options now being considered to improve the Burnside Bridge‘s seismic readiness.

In a feasibility study, officials explored more than 100 possible options. The ones still on the table are: 1, an enhanced seismic retrofit of the existing bridge; 2, a replacement bridge with fixed spans and greater clearance for river traffic; 3, a replacement movable bridge similar to the existing span; and a replacement movable bridge with an extended westbound approach from Northeast Couch Street.

The project team now is looking at these four options in the environmental review phase, where the respective impacts and benefits will be analyzed and a preferred alternative selected.

The public is being encouraged to comment on the possibilities, as well as the project’s need and purpose. An online open house will continue through Sept. 30. Anyone can offer input by visiting: .

Also, two public open houses are scheduled. The first will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Mercy Corps headquarters, 43 S.W. Naito Parkway. The second will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 25, at the Fair-Haired Dumbbell, 11 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Finally, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners will vote on Nov. 1 whether to approve a preferred alternative. Any project also will need the Federal Highway Administration‘s approval.

Multnomah County is paying for the project through the environmental review phase, but additional dollars will be needed for design and construction.
