Development of the 14-acre U.S. Postal Service site in Old Town has taken another step forward.

Prosper Portland last week issued a request for proposals from firms interested in performing project management services 鈥渟upporting 鈥� asset management functions for the United States Postal Services property.鈥�

Essentially, the contracted party or parties will develop a plan to manage maintenance and operations of three existing buildings and parking facilities on the site (bounded by Northwest Broadway, Lovejoy and Hoyt streets and Ninth Avenue) until master planning wraps up and demolition work is scheduled to start.

The latest RFP follows the Postal Service’s cessation of operations at the downtown distribution center in July. A new distribution hub has been built near Portland International Airport, and USPS anticipates vacating the downtown site by January 2019, save for a small retail office with a service counter and post office boxes.

Prosper Portland anticipates demolition of the three existing buildings could start by late 2020. First, the USPS retail office must relocate, and Prosper Portland is working with Jones Lang LaSalle to make that happen.

The USPS site is part of the larger 32-acre Broadway Corridor identified by the city of Portland for possible high-density development and so-called signature attractions. Prosper Portland has already contracted with ZGF Architects to complete the master plan for the USPS site. Denver-based Continuum Partners will provide consulting services.
