Linfield College has agreed to purchase the University of Western States campus in Northeast Portland to expand its nursing program.

The University of Western States will lease back the 10-building campus until May 2020, when Linfield will take possession. Linfield plans to move its School of Nursing to the Portland campus located on Northeast 132nd Avenue, off of Interstate 84 in the Russell neighborhood, the college stated.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

“This was a once-in-a-century opportunity for us to expand in Portland,” Linfield President Miles K. Davis stated in a news release. “It guarantees that our school of nursing will have a secure home, and it gives us additional opportunities to expand in the state’s largest metropolitan area.”

Nursing is a popular major at Linfield, with 44 percent of the class of 2018 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, according to the college. Linfield has a long waiting list for its nursing program, and nursing schools nationwide have had to turn away students because of demand.

Linfield’s nursing school since 1982 has operated at in Northwest Portland. Nursing students spend their first two years at the campus in McMinnville, and then two years in Portland.

The University of Western States campus includes 10 buildings, including a new lecture hall and anatomy laboratory, and is zoned for educational purposes and student housing.
