A celebration was held Friday to mark the topping out of the Multnomah County Central Courthouse project in downtown Portland. The final structural beam was placed atop the 17-story tower by ironworkers with Local 29 working for Alliance Industrial Group.

The project’s groundbreaking was held in October 2016, and construction manager/general contractor began major work on the $324.5 million project in spring 2017. Ongoing fa莽ade work is expected to last through next April, and interiors and finishes will be completed near the end of 2019. Commissioning will begin next summer and run through early 2020, and a grand opening is scheduled for that spring.

The project’s design team includes , the prime architect, and , which is handling courts programming and design. is the owner’s representative for Multnomah County.

Heather Mayther, a journeyman carpenter with Hoffman Structures Inc. who began work on the project last summer as a fifth-term apprentice, speaks about bringing her daughters, seven-year-old triplets, to visit the site to inspire them with the potential of a career in the trades. The project is utilizing apprentice labor of at least 20 percent per trade, 20 percent of which are minorities and 25 percent of which are women.
