Hoffman Construction is building a pair of new middle schools for the Shoreline School District in Seattle and seeking sub-bids for a variety of work for both projects.

The existing Einstein Middle School was built in 1968 and remodeled most recently in 1992. It is approximately 116,000 square feet and serves around 750 students in grades 7 and 8. The existing Kellogg Middle School was built in 1952 and remodeled most recently in 1986. It is approximately 132,000 square feet and serves around 625 students in grades 7 and 8. Each new school will be approximately 150,000 square feet and serve around 1,000 students in grades 6-8.

Both projects are expected to begin in spring 2019 and finish in time for the schools to open in August 2020. Both existing schools will remain occupied throughout construction, except for normal school breaks and vacations. The budget estimates are roughly $80 million ($55.6 million for construction) for each project.

Hoffman Construction, the construction manager-general contractor for the projects, has been authorized to use an alternative subcontractor selection process. Currently, it has three packages up for bidding. No. 2 includes the design-build ground improvement and soil stabilization system for Kellogg Middle School. No. 3 includes earthwork, steel, damp-proofing, gym equipment, elevators and fire suppression systems for both schools. No. 4 includes concrete for both schools.

A pre-bid conference for all three packages will take place via Skype at 9 a.m. on Jan. 9.
