Three employees of members of Associated Builders and Contractors‘ Pacific Northwest chapter earned medals at the 32nd annual National Craft Championships in Long Beach, California, last month.

The event featured 168 craft professionals competing for top honors in 14 categories representing 12 trades, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, sheet metal and welding. Also, a team competition featured journey-level participants from four different crafts working to complete a project. That competition included a two-hour written exam and a daylong, hands-on practical test.

The three Northwest winners were: Matthew Brunner of Protemp Associates, gold in sheet metal and safety award; Sam Burnett of P&L Johnson Mechanical, silver in HVAC; and Brady Petersen of Specialty Heating and Cooling, bronze in HVAC.

鈥淥ur chapter started a local ABC Craft Championship four years ago in October to highlight the construction trades to high school students and to the public,鈥� ABC PNW Chapter President Laurie Kendall stated. 鈥淭hen we sent the winners of the HVAC and sheet metal to ABC National to compete with the best of the best.聽It is amazing to see the passion from our competitors and all ABC members about the construction industry.鈥�

The National Craft Championships started in 1987. Each year the competition spotlights some of the nation’s best craft professionals and the importance of craft skills education.
