A Portland State University School of Architecture exhibit of student designs for a new Burnside Bridge will take place on Wednesday.

The public is invited to attend the event, 鈥淰isualizing a New Burnside Bridge,鈥� in Shattuck Hall, Room 235, at 1914 S.W. Park Ave., from 5 to 8 p.m. It will showcase 2-D and 3-D design concepts for a bridge able to serve Portland today and after a major earthquake.

Meanwhile, Multnomah County is studying possibilities for an earthquake-ready Burnside Bridge. The process is in the environmental assessment stage as the project team works to select a final design.

PSU students pursuing master’s degrees in architecture, under professor Jeff Schnabel, in fall 2018 began developing their own concepts for a new bridge. Students met with the Multnomah County bridge team and visited the inner workings of the current Burnside Bridge. They even watched it lift via use of 94-year-old gears.

The students’ final concepts include the unorthodox. One bridge design features digital art displays for emergency messages. Another links the bridge to a water taxi system, while yet another uses scaffolding to support unreinforced masonry buildings near the bridge and cover areas able to house a public market or emergency services.
