General contractor Skanska USA Building and design firm NBBJ recently celebrated the opening of a $66 million expansion of the St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
The new three-story patient tower at St. Charles has 24 new intensive care unit beds and 28 inpatient beds along with shell space for future expansion of hospital operations.
This is the third major expansion of the facility in the past 12 years and the largest since the addition of the St. Charles Cancer Center. The new patient tower is located north of the hospital’s existing ICU and significantly impacts the overall look and feel of the campus.
This project also included construction of a parking lot with 300 spaces and a second water line to build redundancy.
鈥淭his project was so important for the future of health care in Central Oregon,鈥 Joe Sluka, president and CEO of St. Charles Health System, stated in a hospital press release. 鈥淭his plan ensures we can continue to meet our patients’ needs well into the next century.鈥
The new patient tower opened on Sunday and is a direct response to growing capacity issues at the hospital. The St. Charles Health System Board of Directors voted to advance the project in July 2016.
