Oregon OSHA is now offering a free online course on fall prevention.

鈥淔undamentals of Fall Protection鈥� is two hours and has a total of 28 video segments. It is designed to supplement and not replace employers’ fall protection training.

The course covers fall protection options, equipment inspection and maintenance, and other topics. Interviews with safety experts are included as are examples of how to use fall protection equipment in the field. A detailed overview of OSHA rules and regulations is provided.

鈥淲e encourage employers and workers in Oregon to add this flexible, user-friendly online tool to their fall protection toolbox,鈥� Roy Kroker, public education manager for Oregon OSHA, stated in a press release.

The course also presents the consequences of failing to comply with fall protection rules. One video features the story of a tradesman who was paralyzed after a fall from scaffolding in 1995.

Fall hazards are one of the top causes of jobsite injuries and deaths in the construction industry. OSHA offers the following statistics:

• One in five workplace deaths are due to slips, trips and falls, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
• From 2013 to 2018, there were 7,195 accepted disabling claims in Oregon due to falls to a lower level.
• In 2018, fall protection was the most commonly cited violation for Oregon’s construction industry, with 443 total violations and initial penalties of $902,990.
• In one year, injuries from falls cost the U.S. economy more than $13 billion, according to the National Safety Council.
