Health care construction projects are continuing to pop up in the Portland-metro area.
In Oregon City, one of the latest is the new AFC Urgent Care facility being built by general contractor Joseph Hughes Construction. The single-story, 3,400-square-foot building is rising on a property at the busy intersection of Warner Milne Road and Molalla Avenue.
Stewart Gordon Straus Architect designed the project, which is being developed by the M. Hashem Limited Partnership run by property owner Mike Hashem.
鈥淭hey’re a repeat customer for us,鈥 Joseph Hughes Construction President Joe Hughes said. 鈥淚t used to be Doctors Express before it was bought by AFC. We’ve done several projects for them over the past seven or eight years, and the neighborhood here has been really receptive to an urgent care facility.鈥
AFC Portland is locally owned and operated. It is a physician-staffed provider of urgent care, occupational medicine, and other non-emergency health care. The Oregon City facility will include digital x-rays, on-site lab testing, state-of-the-art diagnostics, and electronic medical records.
A standard slab-on-grade foundation and wood framing are being used for the building. A central staff area will be surrounded by patient exam rooms.

Ground was broken in March, and the team expects to deliver the building by mid-August, Hughes said.
鈥淎side from a tight site, it’s been a relatively easy project,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here are always issues on any job 鈥 things don’t work in the field the way they do on paper. But we’ll have to change that.鈥
The building is relatively tall for a single-story structure at over 20 feet. That height is being used for marketing, Hughes said.
鈥淭he concept these days is to build them tall for signage,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey want to get the signs up out of the weeds. With all the landscaping and street trees, retailers get blocked out, and this is a highly visible corner with a lot of traffic in both directions.鈥
Currently, Joseph Hughes Construction and its subcontractors, including Vanco Contracting of Sweet Home, are performing interior finishes and completing construction of new sidewalks and other infrastructure.
鈥淲e’re finishing up the ceiling grid, trimming out electrical, setting tile,鈥 Joseph Hughes Construction project manager Jef Krohn said. 鈥淏ut we’re all done with drywall and paint.鈥
