The Oregon State University College of Forestry on Thursday formally opened its new A.A. 鈥淩ed鈥� Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory on its main Corvallis campus.

The 17,500-square-foot lab is part of OSU‘s Forest Science Complex and is the new home of the TallWood Design Institute, an interdisciplinary partnership between OSU’s College of Forestry and College of Engineering and the University of Oregon’s College of Design. The institute focuses on construction of tall mass-timber structures.

The new lab has 15,000 square feet of mass-timber structural testing space. That includes a 2,500-square-foot advanced wood products manufacturing area, a flexible demonstration classroom for workshops and professional development, and a 60-foot-by-80-foot strong wall and reaction floor system for structural testing of wood structures up to three stories.

The project was designed by Michael Green Architecture and built by general contractor Andersen Construction via a construction manager/general contractor delivery method.

鈥淭he institute has close links with Oregon’s manufacturing community and we are proud to have worked with both of the state’s mass-timber producers, DR Johnson and Freres Lumber, during their product development efforts,鈥� TallWood Design Institute Director Iain Macdonald stated in a press release. 鈥淲e have also been able to conduct structural, fire, acoustic and durability testing for many of the mass-timber building projects that have taken shape around Oregon and beyond.鈥�

The new laboratory is part of OSU’s new 95,000-square-foot forest science complex that includes the George W. Peavy Forest Science Center. It also was designed by Michael Green Architecture and is being built by Andersen Construction using cross-laminated timber panels. The Peavy Center is expected to open in spring 2020.

Red Emmerson and his father, R.H. 鈥淐urly鈥� Emmerson, were the founders of Sierra Pacific Industries, one of the largest lumber producers in the United States. The company donated $6 million to the forest science complex.
