The city of Portland has pledged to provide $631,321 in grant funding to local groups engaged in workforce development, criminal record clearing and expungement and re-entry housing services.

Allocation of this second round of city cannabis tax revenue was approved by the City Council at its Oct. 23 meeting. Up to $100,000 will go to nonprofit Constructing Hope to help it provide construction training for up to 50 individuals.

鈥淐onstruction is one of the few industries that will hire people with a criminal record,鈥� Constructing Hope President Pat Daniels stated in a press release. 鈥淏ut that record bars graduates from many projects, such as federally-funded contracts. With city of Portland support, we will help our participants reduce or remove their criminal records history and secure their driver’s license in a timely manner.鈥�

The Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center and Rosemary Anderson High School, which previously received grant money in the first round of funding, will also receive up to $100,000. Officials anticipate 48 to 60 low-income youths and young adults of color being able to take part in the program to obtain construction-specific job skills, hands-on experience, industry certification and apprenticeship eligibility.
