A group of companies and regulators have reached agreement to develop detailed plans to clean up Swan Island, a portion of the Portland Harbor Superfund site.

The companies agreed to conduct remedial design work to develop a detailed cleanup implementation plan. Design is expected to take about four years.

鈥淭he actual construction is a ways off,鈥� said Suzanne Skadowski, spokeswoman for EPA Region 10.

HydroGeoLogic Inc. of Reston, Virginia, has been hired to perform the engineering design work, Vigor Industrial spokesman Benton Strong said.

Signatories to the agreement, announced Friday, include performing parties Daimler Trucks North America LLC, Vigor Industrial LLC, Cascade General Inc., Shipyard Commerce Center LLC; and settling parties Maritime Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, General Services Administration, Bonneville Power Administration, U.S. Department of Defense (Department of the Navy and Army Corps of Engineers), the Oregon Department of State Lands, the city of Portland and the Port of Portland.

Swan Island is one of the highly contaminated 鈥渉ot spots鈥� identified for cleanup by the EPA. The area is 117 acres and a mile long.

The EPA in 2017 issued a record of decision requiring remediation of the Superfund site.
