SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT: The two-story, 53,400-square-foot headquarters facility will include space for administrative offices, medical and counseling offices, group meeting rooms, a commercial kitchen, and amenities such as a fitness center, art studio, patient resource center, library, and therapeutic gardens and outdoor gathering spaces. The building supports 70 adult residential treatment beds, treating patients in gender programs where they identify or are most comfortable, 24 medical withdrawal management beds, designated space for peer and family counseling services, as well as capacity to serve 920 outpatients at a time.

Recognized by Portland’s City Council as being thoughtfully designed and functional, as well as representative of the type of architecture the city likes to see in the community, the trauma-informed design of De Paul’s new treatment center will focus on allowing patients to engage with treatment, nature and each other in purpose-built and outdoor therapeutic spaces, with more space and functional adjacencies than provided in De Paul’s existing buildings.

De Paul Treatment Centers and Holst received the Portland Design Commission’s 2019 Design Excellence Award for the architecture and design of the facility. The award was presented as part of the design commission’s 2019-2020 State of the City Design Report presentation to City Hall, recognizing a project from the previous year that best exemplifies the three tenets of design: context, public realm, and quality and resilience.

De Paul Treatment Centers, soon to be Fora Health, is one of Oregon’s largest providers of substance use disorder treatment for youth and adults. Since it’s founding in 1977, it has served more than 40,000 people in the Portland metropolitan area.
