PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE: Black Butte Ranch, on 1,800 acres in Central Oregon, serves as a home for year-round residents and a popular vacation destination. The ranch community began a comprehensive redevelopment plan in 2013, and after working with Hacker on the new Lakeside recreation and dining complex (completed in 2016) and a new general store (completed in 2021), the team turned its attention to the resort’s 50-year-old lodge. After an analysis determined a renovation of the lodge would be impractical, Hacker began an extensive, yearlong outreach process to understand the community’s vision and priorities for the lodge’s replacement.

A new 28,000-square-foot structure (including an exterior deck) was designed to honor and evolve the original ranch buildings’ designs while providing careful framing and layering of views as well as a sensitive interpretation of regional materials and forms.

The interior will feature contrasting tones of native wood species to create a sense of both warmth and openness. Crews salvaged as much of the original lodge’s wood as possible to create guardrails, screens, furniture, and wall finishes. An established pine tree on the site could not be saved, so it was transformed into custom tabletops for the restaurant and bar. There will also be a uniquely textured, double-height stone fireplace.

The exterior will be clad in charred cedar created via a traditional Japanese wood treatment that maintains the previous building’s weathered look while providing additional resistance to insects and fire. The focus on local resources also will be visible in the landscape design, which calls for drought-tolerant native plants. Building materials will be sourced regionally.

The new building will have twice as much space as the existing one, and be divided into three main sections: public spaces, including the 70-seat lodge restaurant and bar, 12-seat Fireside lounge, 50-seat Aspen lounge/deck/bar, and 16-seat Ponderosa private dining room and outside lounge; the Three Sisters private area with a 210-seat-capacity event room, large dressing room, and meeting room; and a state-of-the-art kitchen with expanded catering services.
