Intel has shut down plans to build a $700 million research and development mega lab in Hillsboro. Construction had been set to begin this year at the Jones Farm campus in Hillsboro.

The 200,000-square-foot lab would have been used to develop more sustainable solutions for data centers in areas such as heating, cooling and water usage. Last year, Intel introduced the technology industry’s first open intellectual property immersion liquid cooling solution and reference design.

鈥淲e remain dedicated to fostering innovation across multiple business lines in Oregon, including manufacturing, data center, software and others,鈥� Intel Communications Manager Elly Akopyan stated in an email. 鈥淎s we accelerate our strategy and respond to the current demand profile environment, we are looking to reduce costs and increase efficiencies through multiple initiatives.鈥�

Intel has not made any announcements about other projects like the mega lab.

This includes exploring more cost-effective real estate options to continue the data center research and development work in Oregon that is already in progress.

Intel is aiming to reduce expenses by $3 billion this year and billions of dollars more in years to come. The cost cutting may impact thousands of Intel workers, according to a Bloomberg report.

As discussed in Intel’s 2022 third-quarter earnings call, the company is working to accelerate its strategy while navigating a challenging macro-economic environment.

鈥淲e are focused on identifying cost reductions and efficiency gains through multiple initiatives, including some business and function-specific workforce reductions in areas across the company,鈥� Akopyan stated.

Intel has more than 22,000 employees in Oregon. The company is continuing to invest in core areas, including U.S.-based manufacturing operations, Akopyan stated, to ensure it is well-positioned for long-term growth.
