An approximately $120 million ballpark is in the works for the Hillsboro Hops.

The city of Hillsboro on Tuesday approved an amendment to the contract with Mortenson Company for design and construction of a new ballpark at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex 鈥 the site of the Hops鈥 current home, Ron Tonkin Field. The city also approved another cost allocation agreement between the city and Hillsboro Hops.

The city is partnering with the Hops to support the team in efforts to meet new Major League Baseball 鈥淗igh A鈥 full-season requirements. These standards address security, home and visiting club facilities, field playability, and maintenance.

An alternatives analysis concluded that building a new ballpark at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex would be more cost-effective than renovating Ron Tonkin Field, according to the city.

In May 2022, the city awarded Mortenson the design-build contract. SRG Partnership and Populous have also been contracted by the city for the project.

Site limitations contributed to an increase in the project鈥檚 cost. Upon completion of 65 percent of design, the city and Mortenson will negotiate a guaranteed maximum price, which will include 100 percent of design and most of construction. That proposed price will be presented to the City Council for approval later.

The council on Tuesday approved a second interim cost allocation agreement. It allocates 80 percent of project costs to the Hops and 20 percent to the city. The agreement includes allocation of all costs up to 65 percent of design for $8.3 million. The Hops will pay $6.6 million, and the city will pay $1.6 million.

The cost allocation does not include construction or early procurement, which will be covered by a future agreement.

Construction is scheduled to begin later this year and finish before the start of the Hops鈥 2025 season.
