Architect

Mackenzie is pleased to announce the hire of architect Charles 鈥淐huck鈥� Hayward. He joins the firm鈥檚 advanced technology team, which has a long history of design work in the semiconductor industry. Hayward鈥檚 addition exemplifies the team鈥檚 strategic growth.
Hayward brings 30 years of experience in the architecture, engineering & construction (AEC) industry, with the last 15 years focused on the design and delivery of semiconductor manufacturing and R&D facilities. Hayward has worked as a senior construction architect and a design manager for an international semiconductor company based out of San Jose, California, and Hillsboro, Oregon. His career has taken him around the world, and has included the design and construction management of front-end and back-end semiconductor fabrication facilities; campus master planning; and pathfinding of facilities for technologies not yet fully realized.
Hayward has a highly technical skill set and a passion for problem-solving. In addition to possessing high-tech expertise, Hayward has worked on a diverse range of projects, from memory care facilities and retirement communities to hotel casinos, student housing, and large-scale and small places of worship.

Education: University of Oregon, bachelor’s degree
If you had not chosen your current profession, what profession would you choose and why? This is tough because I love what I do and have known what I wanted to do career-wise since I took my first drafting class in seventh grade. Fortunately, my path has afforded me the ability to travel and see new places and cultures, something I also love. That said, I have always been mildly interested in the story aspect of photography and cinematography, so if I had to choose, I would say photographer. As a visual person, I think storytelling with pictures is something I could see myself doing.
What was a recent (or favorite) vacation you took? While working overseas in Ireland, the assignment and family adventure were crushed by the pandemic. Travel distance was locked down to 5 kilometers for essentials and exercise only for almost a year. We were desperate to see anything outside the immediate few blocks of east Dublin where we were living, so when Malta was accepting visitors the next summer, we went. It was amazing. Old world architecture, interesting history, affordable, walkable, not overly touristy, and a great scuba diving spot.
What do you do when you want to relax? I got hooked on astrophotography during a trip to the beach to try and see the northern lights. I didn鈥檛 see the lights but did meet some other night photographers and they taught me the basics. Staying up all night to stare at stars is exciting and relaxing, and I do spend more time than I care to admit studying maps and planning trips to try and capture the stars. The downside of this release is how it throws off your biological clock and being pleasant to those around you in the morning.
Favorite book (or movie, band or pop culture item, etc.): “Fahrenheit 451,” “The Grapes of Wrath,” or even “The Odyssey.” Lately it has been a lot of young adult fiction like “Ender’s Game,” the “Uglies” series, and “Strange the Dreamer.”
