The Hidden Creek Park West project involved a new 11-acre park on the west side of 53rd Avenue in Hillsboro. Adjacent to the 53rd Avenue Community Park and just south of the newly completed Hidden Creek Community Center, Hidden Creek Park West is one part of Hillsboro鈥檚 new 鈥渢rifecta.鈥
The park project, led by P&C Construction, was designed and built for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds 鈥 connecting, creating and strengthening the Hillsboro community.
The project scope included natural play features, a sand and water play area, specialized runnel paving, naturalistic plantings, pathways and trails, a fitness area, a play space for pop-up activities, a games area, shade structures, picnic pavilion, restrooms, parking and open spaces filled with climate-adapting landscaping and native restoration plants.
The park features a custom play structure designed and fabricated by Earthscape Play Structures. With feedback from the community, the structure came from the city鈥檚 鈥淲oods Gone Wild鈥 theme and features a Forest Giant emerging from the woods. The giant鈥檚 name, Oro, was voted on by the community and comes from 鈥淗illsbORO.鈥 It means 鈥済old鈥 in Spanish. Following in the large footsteps of storybook characters like the Iron Giant, B.F.G. and Clifford the Big Red Dog, Oro lays on the forest floor with an outstretched hand and bent legs, inviting children to join its world.
Children can embark on adventures through a waterway/stream, an interactive marvel that was a true collaborative effort. The team, including community members, designers and fabricators from Nassal 鈥 a fabricator of installations at major theme parks like Sea World and Disneyland 鈥 worked tirelessly to create an immersive 鈥渞iver experience.鈥
Shotcrete, a durable material selected for its resilience, forms the foundation of the flowing waterway. With the push of a button, visitors can activate the electronic system that releases water from the 鈥渢op鈥 of the river, cascading down in a mesmerizing display. The result? A lifelike river, complete with access points for children to splash, play and create with real dirt and mud.
What sets Hidden Creek Park West apart is its unwavering commitment to inclusivity. A 鈥渃ommunications board鈥 allows non-verbal children to express themselves, while safe and aesthetically pleasing fencing offers parents peace of mind.
