The Eugene Family YMCA, with a history spanning over a century, found its humble beginnings at the University of Oregon before settling into its Patterson Street location in the 1950s.

A modest 50,000-square-foot facility with 34 parking spaces, it was a hub of after-school care, jogging programs and swimming lessons. As time went on, the YMCA鈥檚 programs evolved, growing to serve thousands each day. The dream of a new YMCA became a pressing necessity as the building aged. Two decades of planning, 18 months of tireless construction and the support of the community culminated in 2023 with the grand opening of the Don Stathos Campus.

PIVOT Architecture laid the blueprint for a modern, two-story facility designed to serve every facet of community life. The building is fully ADA-accessible and boasts a flexible floorplan that can adapt to changing needs. The facility includes academic tutoring centers, maker spaces and learning labs, 鈥減laycare鈥� areas for children, community rooms, a teaching kitchen, preschool classrooms, a Health and Wellness Center and an expanded Aquatics Center.

The new facility was constructed to meet the highest level of seismic standards so it can be re-purposed as a shelter after an earthquake. The building also features floor-to-ceiling windows. A reclaimed wood wall adds warmth to the design.

To construct the 75,000-square-foot building, the design team and Chambers Construction had to create an elaborate sequencing plan. Structural members were brought on-site to construct the roof, with CMU walls identified as a critical path to get the roof structure in place.

The foundation for the lap and recreation pools had to be excavated and reinforced to allow for the walls to be built. The timing of building the pool foundations was during winter, when the water table was at its highest point and rain was constant. The Chambers team worked to install an efficient pumping system to keep the pool areas from 鈥減ooling up鈥� with water so work could proceed.

The facility is built on what was Kalapuya land, and free memberships are provided to members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon.
