Three Portland-area architects have been inducted into the AIA College of Fellows (class of 2025). Kathy Berg, a partner in ZGF Architects鈥� Portland office; Stuart Emmons, founder and principal of Emmons Design; and Thomas Robinson, founder of LEVER Architecture, received the honor 鈥� the highest distinction for members of the American Institute of Architects. The FAIA title recognizes those who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership, professional excellence, and a lasting impact on the design profession and society. This year, 83 member architects were named Fellows and 10 international nonmember architects were named Honorary Fellows.

Berg, a partner in ZGF鈥檚 Portland office, has contributed to a variety of projects, including research laboratories, campuses, child care centers, and professional sports training facilities. Berg worked on the PAE Living Building 鈥� the world鈥檚 largest commercial urban living building; the Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance 鈥� the first practice facility designed exclusively for professional women athletes built from the ground up; and the San Antonio Spurs鈥� Victory Capital Performance Center.

Berg served seven years on the Architecture Foundation of Oregon Board of Directors. Currently she is a trustee for The Nature Conservancy and an adviser to the Colorado Mass Timber Coalition.

Berg has a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati.

Emmons has focused on designing and implementing modular housing. He was the architect for NAYA鈥檚 Kah San Chako Haws 鈥� one of the first modular affordable housing projects in the Pacific Northwest. He designed the MicroStudio when he was vice president at Blokable in Vancouver, Washington. He also created the vision for the Bybee Lakes Hope Center in Portland.

Emmons currently sits on the Modular Building Institute Board of Directors. He was co-chair, with Brian Libby, of the Friends of Memorial Coliseum, which helped see the building declared a National Treasure.

Emmons has a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute.

Robinson is the founder of LEVER Architecture, which has offices in Portland and Los Angeles. Recent projects include the transformation of NBC Universal鈥檚 Los Angeles campus; 843 N Spring Street 鈥� one of the largest mass-timber buildings in Los Angeles; and Cascada 鈥� a boutique hotel and spa in Portland and a prototype for flat-pack construction. Robinson also has worked on unique buildings for The Nature Conservancy, Meyer Memorial Trust and adidas. LEVER has completed more than 20 mass-timber structures and 40-plus research studies.

Robinson has a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prospective AIA Fellowship candidates must have at least 10 years of AIA architect membership and must demonstrate influence in at least one of the following areas: promote the aesthetic, scienti铿乧, and practical ef铿乧iency of the profession; advance the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of practice; coordinate the building industry, and the profession of architecture; ensure the advancement of the living standards of people through their improved environment; dedicate oneself to a profession that continually grows in its service to society; and advance the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education and training.

This year鈥檚 inductees were selected by a 10-member Jury of Fellows.
