Rita Haberman has spent 23 years pioneering sustainable building practices across Oregon and beyond.

Her career began as outreach and development manager at The ReBuilding Center, followed by advancing energy efficiency initiatives with Portland Energy Conservation. She then spent 15 years delivering highly sustainable building projects for clients locally and internationally at Brightworks Sustainability, where she led certification efforts across multiple frameworks including LEED, WELL, Fitwel, Earth Advantage, Living Building Challenge and CORE.

A standout achievement was her leadership in the successful LEED Platinum certification of the OHSU Knight Cancer Research Building, demonstrating her ability to navigate complex technical and stakeholder challenges in sustainable construction.

Currently co-leading DEQ鈥檚 Built Environment Program, Haberman played a pivotal role in securing a landmark $197 million federal grant for Oregon. She co-developed the Low-Embodied Carbon Housing Program, directing $25.6 million toward constructing more than 940 low-embodied carbon, affordable housing units across the state over five years. The program is projected to avoid more than 343,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent by 2050.

Haberman also led a successful $3.5 million grant application for the Pacific Northwest EPD Partnership to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, addressing regional gaps in assessing embodied carbon of building materials.
