Principal
Mackenzie is pleased to announce that architect Steve Rupert is joining the firm as principal. With over two decades of industry experience, Steve brings a wealth of expertise in project leadership. He offers a proven ability to lead cross-disciplinary design teams through highly complex projects from start to finish and passion for designing environments and buildings where people experience a sense of welcome and find joy. This passion is realized by guiding design teams through the technical and logistical demands of complex projects, which ultimately benefit the communities they serve.
鈥淎s a leader, I enjoy getting everybody together and approaching challenges collectively,鈥 says Rupert. 鈥淎 successful team is mutually responsible for shared goals, and part of the joy of the job is bringing out individuals鈥 strengths and unique focuses to the benefit of the group.鈥
Recently, Steve led The Springs at The Waterfront in Vancouver, WA, a project he completed with GBD Architects. This award-winning senior living project, which focused on sustainability, placemaking, and community, hinged on close collaboration between all the disciplines involved.
At Mackenzie, Steve is looking forward to leveraging the firm鈥檚 guiding principles of unified design and collaborating with a diverse range of in-house disciplines. He will provide leadership for complex projects, particularly in the senior living and multifamily sectors.
Education: University of Oregon, Bachelor of Architecture
If you had not chosen your current profession, what profession would you choose and why? Aeronautical engineering because it鈥檚 design that has to understand function and air travel transformed our global connectivity. After this major was canceled at Benson High School my junior year, I found architecture.
What was a recent (or favorite) vacation you took? One of my favorites was a trip to Italy that started with a long weekend in Rome and then a week in Cortona with visits to Florence, Siena, and several wineries. Tuscany is truly a wonderful part of the world.
What do you do when you want to relax? A quick walk is always good, but for extended time, I head to the coast. There鈥檚 nothing more relaxing than the slow pace of coastal towns mixed with sea breeze.
Favorite book (or movie, band or pop culture item, etc.): I鈥檓 going back to the original Star Wars trilogy. It has stood the test of time, my parents loved it, I grew up on it, and my kids still find it relevant.
Favorite quotation: 鈥淲hether you think you can, or you think you can’t 鈥 you’re right.鈥 This one has been resonating with me lately.
