If you had not chosen your current profession, what profession would you choose and why? I originally started out in college in nursing school, then pre-med. So, I鈥檇 probably be a nurse or physician, diagnosing problems, coordinating a team, and operating in high-stakes environments where precision matters. Today, the main difference is that my patients are buildings, and thankfully, they complain less.
What was a recent (or favorite) vacation you took? I recently went to Iceland and learned how to ice climb, which is exactly as humbling as it sounds. There鈥檚 also something about hanging off a 2,500-year-old frozen waterfall that really puts deadlines and emails into perspective.
What do you do when you want to relax? I tinker with classic cars. I鈥檓 currently working on converting my 1974 VW Thing to electric as well as my GL1100 Gold Wing Honda to an electric caf茅 racer. It鈥檚 a different kind of design challenge with more trial and error and occasionally questioning all of my life choices.
Favorite book (or movie, band or pop culture item, etc.):聽I鈥檝e always been drawn to stories that blend design, storytelling, and curiosity of time and history, especially where place and time actually shape each other. Films and series like “Midnight in Paris,” “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” and “Interstellar” resonate with me because they show how environments evolve alongside the people who inhabit them and how place anchors people across time. I appreciate worlds where the built environment isn鈥檛 just a backdrop, but a character that changes over time, holds memory, adapts, and quietly influences a story.
Favorite quotation:聽鈥淧erfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.鈥 鈥揂ntoine de Saint-Exupery. It鈥檚 a good reminder that whether it鈥檚 a building or a process, clarity usually comes from restraint and simplicity.
