While political outcry erupted, workers pushed steadily forward to build a new facility for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Newport. The city last week issued a certificate of occupancy for the last portion of the dock, and remaining work is expected to wrap up this week – a few days ahead of schedule.

In a formal response to the Government Accountability Office, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it will assess whether there is a "practicable alternative" to awarding a long-term lease for its operations center to the Port of Newport.
