A $125 million bond will go to Metro region voters this November to update facilities at the Oregon Zoo.
The money, which is being requested by Metro, would provide an expansion of the elephants’ living space from one-and-a-half to six acres; update the zoo’s hospital and quarantine areas; create a new polar bear exhibit; improve hippopotamus and penguin habitats with water conserving filters; and redo the chimpanzee site.
In addition, the plan would pay for an internal financial audit, an independent audit of finances and a citizen oversight committee to monitor spending, as well as improving conservation education programs.
The measure would levy a tax of just under nine cents per $1,000 of assessed value or $18 per year for homes valued at $200,000. An average homeowner would pay $1.38 per month or $16.56 per year for a home valued at $190,000.
