Three historic single-family homes in Tigard will be remodeled this fall. But these aren’t just houses; the buildings are owned by Luke Dorf Inc., a nonprofit group that provides mental health care to people in Hillsboro, Tigard, Beaverton, Portland and Gresham.

Constructed in the 1930s and 1940s, the three houses are at 11895 S.W. Greenburg Road, in Tigard, and contain Luke Dorf’s clinical and administrative services.

Designed by Scott Edwards Architecture, the renovation includes a 1,000-square-foot addition between the two houses facing Greenburg Road and a 3,000-square-foot addition to the back of the house on Center Street.

鈥淲e’re trying to consolidate the three houses into a proper campus,鈥� Jesse Graden, SEA project architect, said. 鈥淥ne side will be administration for all of their projects in the tri-county area, and the other side will be an out-patient clinic with parking in between. The layout will work better in a commercial way.鈥�

Owners Howard Spanbock and John Trinh felt it was important to maintain the residential quality of the homes with the renovation so that their clients would still feel comfortable there.

鈥淔or the same cost, you could tear down the houses and have a new facility,鈥� Graden said. 鈥淏ut the homes are important to the fabric of the area. The houses are recognizable for the clients. It won’t be intimidating like a shiny new clinic building. The homes will be resided with cedar lap siding, along with some stucco for contrast.鈥�

Another client goal was to maintain green space. SEA achieved this by placing green roofs on the roofs of the building additions and planting new trees.

鈥淲e will bring a stairwell up to the roof and have a small deck on the green roof,鈥� said Graden. 鈥淚f there’s a counselor with a few clients, they can go up there and sit at a picnic table and have some private space that is outdoors. The green roofs will also be visible from inside the building鈥�

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, and a general contractor has not yet been chosen.

The SEA project team includes firm principal Sid Scott, Jennifer Marsicek and Jesse Graden. Other project partners include structural engineer Phil Boultinghouse of David Evans and Associates, civil engineer Bruce Haunreiter of HHPR Inc., landscape architect Steve Shapiro of Shapiro Didway, and MEP engineer Kevin Duell of Interface Engineering.
