Future engineers at Portland’s Academy for Architecture, Construction & Engineering will have the tools they need to learn this fall thanks to a $20,000 grant from .

The money will pay for classroom supplies and materials for the charter school’s Project Lead the Way engineering courses, which combine traditional math and science classes with engineering curriculum. The courses, which include Introduction to Engineering Design, Principals of Engineering, Civil Engineering/Architecture, Digital Electronics and Engineering Design and Development, will be offered during the 2009-2010 school year. Fifty students will be able to enroll in those courses.

鈥淲e would have struggled to provide enough equipment and materials for these classes had we not received the grant,鈥 director Mike Taylor said. 鈥淏eing able to instruct students in smaller teams, and having appropriate equipment for each student is a great advantage.鈥

Taylor said ACE Academy students recently gave a presentation at Intel, which then encouraged the school to apply for a grant.

鈥淚 think the PLTW courses better prepare students for other roles in the industry,鈥 Taylor said. 鈥淚f we can move one student from somewhere else to engineering, that’s great.鈥
