An open house tonight will outline proposed changes to TriMet‘s Rockwood/E. 188th St. MAX station in Gresham. A redesign has been planned for the 24-year-old station to improve safety.

鈥淲e’re going to replace the old, brick, room-like shelters that have very little transparency with glass shelters,鈥� said Jillian Detweiler, TriMet senior planner. 鈥淲e want to use design to reinforce the concept that you need a fare to be on the platform.鈥�

Some pedestrians coming to and from the station have been struck by motor vehicles while not using crosswalks. To remedy that, the station’s eastbound platform will be moved to the west side.

A $3 million Connect Oregon II grant and a $1.95 million commitment from the Gresham Redevelopment Commission will help pay for project costs. The station was chosen because it’s near a former Fred Meyer store, which will soon be redeveloped. General contractor Skanska in January will issue sub-bids for the project, according to Detweiler.

The open house will be held tonight from 4 to 7 p.m. at 18535 S.E. Stark St., in Gresham.
