Builders in Marion County have received a break on for certain types of projects through February 2010.

The county recently announced that beginning this month it would defer SDCs for single-family, smaller multifamily, and light commercial projects outside city limits until March 1, 2010. Applicants who qualify can wave SDC charges up to $5,000 until they receive a certificate of occupancy. A $75 fee is required to defer the charges.

鈥淭he deferral is to stimulate building activity in the county,鈥 said Cynthia Schmitt, Marion County engineer. 鈥淚t won’t help a huge population, but it will make it easier for people in those areas to complete their projects.鈥

Schmitt said that cities have authority on SDCs within city limits, so the county can waive fees only for projects in unincorporated areas. Salem, the largest city in Marion County, already has a deferral program in place.

鈥淪ingle-family home construction will take the most advantage of the program,鈥 Schmitt said. 鈥淚t costs $2,060 in SDCs for a single-family residential project. Small office spaces, and smaller multifamily and commercial projects will also be eligible.鈥
