Architects Kurt Haapala and Erik Goodfriend have been promoted to associate principals at Mahlum Architects.
Haapala has 15 years of experience in architecture, and has co-written papers on promoting the 2030 Challenge within higher education. He has worked on projects for Oregon State University, Mt. Hood Community College, Linfield College and others while frequently speaking about environmental responsibility in higher education design. Haapala is a licensed architect in Oregon, Washington and Michigan, and has been with Mahlum for 11 years. He became a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accredited professional in 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a master鈥檚 degree in architecture from the University of Michigan.

Goodfriend also has spent the last 11 years with Mahlum, and has worked on projects for Providence Medical Group, Rogue Valley Medical Center, Oregon Health & Sciences University, and others. He is currently project manager for the renovation and master planning of Salem Hospital, and also is working on projects for Whidbey General Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash. He is a licensed architect in Oregon, Washington and California, and holds a Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University.
