The city of Salem is currently seeking $450,000 to repair an eroding bank at Wallace Marine Park.

鈥淭he issue is there’s a section of bank that has been eroding away for several years,鈥� said Allen Dannen, engineering program manager with the city of Salem’s public works department. 鈥淭he challenge has been to find a solution we can get a permit for.鈥�

Dannen said in the past the city would have repaired an eroding bank with riprap, which uses stones, concrete rubble and other materials to armor a shoreline. That option, however, is not considered environmentally acceptable by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

鈥淚nstead we’re pursuing a bioengineered solution, which will use some stones as well as logs and vegetation to repair the bank,鈥� said Dannen. 鈥淭hat method will be more compatible with the river’s ecosystem.鈥�

WHPacific was the lead designer for the project. Now, with permits issued by the Corps and the Oregon Department of State Lands, the city is looking for money from the Oregon State Marine Board and other sources. Dannen expects project construction to begin in 2011.
