The Portland Architecture and Design Festival is winding down as the end of October draws near. The festival is presented by the American Institute of Architects Portland chapter, the Center for Architecture, the Architecture Foundation of Oregon, the International Interior Design Association鈥檚 Oregon chapter, the American Society of Landscape Architects, Portland Art Museum, Portland Center Stage, Mercy Corps, Bosco-Milligan Foundation, Street of Eames and Portland State University. Architecture Foundation of Oregon鈥檚 Honored Citizen Dinner

Monday, Oct. 26; social hour at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m.; Oregon Ballroom, Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. MLK Jr. Blvd.
AFO鈥檚 Honored Citizens 鈥� whether professionals, educators, artists, philanthropists or public-service contributors 鈥� are selected each year for their gifts to Oregon鈥檚 built environment. Portland Eco-districts: A Natural Future

This moderated panel discussion will explore Portland鈥檚 newly established 鈥渆co-districts.鈥� How do they work? What work is being done locally? And how far can we go to create an idealistic future plan for our city? The multidisciplinary panel will include architects, landscape architects and urban designers. A University of Oregon student exhibition also will be on display. Admission is free.

The Rural Studio

In 1993, Auburn University professor and architect Samuel Mockbee founded the Rural Studio, a design-build architecture lab in which students conceive and construct homes and community spaces in the depressed Alabama community of Hale County. This documentary directed by Chuck Schultz captures this program鈥檚 innovative vision of architecture as a social art form capable of elevating the human spirit. Admission is free.

Street of Eames Goes to Work

The Center for Architecture and the Street of Eames present this self-guided tour of the city鈥檚 most creative work spaces. Featured offices include those of ZGF Architects, Ziba Design, BOORA Architects, Mercy Corps, North, Holst Architecture, BSide6, Vallaster Corl, and the AIA鈥檚 own Center for Architecture. Proceeds will benefit the Center for Architecture and after-school programs for Portland鈥檚 homeless students.
