$8K fine issued for asphalt oil spill

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality announced an $8,000 fine today for a company whose tanker overturned last summer, spilling asphalt oil into McCord Creek in the Columbia River Gorge. The spill closed Interstate 84 eastbound and prevented contractors from getting to a mandatory prebid meeting in Hood River.

DEQ penalized Granite Northwest Inc., based in Camas, Wash., for polluting state waters after a crash on July 8, 2009 spilled 1,000 gallons of the oil into the creek, about 40 miles east of Portland. The tanker truck crashed and overturned on the interstate, stopping on the McCord Creek Bridge.

The oil coated about 100 feet of the creek, slicking its banks and requiring the removal of vegetation, soil and rocks, according to a DEQ release. The fine could have been worse, according to the release, but Granite Northwest started cleaning up the spill quickly.
