Portland City Council today approved $7.5 million in upgrades to Union Station.

The historic train station will soon get 50,000 square feet of new roofing, new exterior windows and doors and select seismic stabilization, thanks to a $1.2 million transportation enhancement grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation and $1.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The remaining funds will be provided by the Portland Development Commission.

“Union Station is a jewel of our city and it needs a lot of work,” said Commissioner Dan Saltzman.

Built in the late 1800s by Northern Pacific Terminal Company, Union Station currently serves as an Amtrak station and also contains offices and Wilf’s Restaurant and Piano Bar. The project will go to bid in a few weeks.
