Oregon lost 14,400 construction jobs in 2009, according to from Associated General Contractors of America. The change is a 19 percent loss for the state.

The Portland area, which includes Portland, Hillsboro and Vancouver, Wash., lost 9,100 jobs, or 18 percent.

“Construction employment is dropping everywhere and plummeting almost everywhere,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist with AGC. “Looking at this data, it is quite clear that the construction industry has yet to hit bottom.”

Other cities in Oregon also lost construction jobs. Bend lost 700 construction, mining and logging jobs (16 percent). Corvallis lost 200 construction, mining and logging jobs (17 percent).  The Eugene-Springfield area lost 700 construction jobs (12 percent). Medford lost 500 construction jobs (15 percent), and Salem lost 800 construction jobs (11 percent).

The analysis of federal data was released March 10 and measures the change in the U.S. construction workforce between January 2009 and January 2010. Every state lost construction jobs. Nevada lost the highest percentage: 29.9 percent. North Dakota lost the least: 1 percent.
