Ouch. A recent ranking of America’s by Bicycle magazine has Portland taking second fiddle to…wait for it…Minneapolis.
So how did the City of Lakes beat out Portland? Despite Portland’s multi-million dollar bike plan and , the magazine was impressed not only by Minneapolis’ 120 miles of on- and off-street bike facilities, but by the willingness of its citizens to get on their bikes in below freezing temperatures.
My editor confirms that on a trip to Minneapolis in February, she saw several feet of snow on the ground but the bike racks that lined the city’s streets remained full.
I guess its time for PDX to step up its game, or at least strap on some parkas and ride more next winter.
